This is a newly type-reset reprint of the Reverend Silas Tertius Rand’s classic 1875 primer for learning the Mi’kmaq (Micmac) language - a Canadian aboriginal language used by over 7,000 speakers in the Atlantic provinces, as well as some 1,000 speakers in the U.S. It contains a wealth of vocabulary categorized according to topics, as well as lessons with reading exercises.

The full, original title was “A first reading book in the Micmac language: Comprising the Micmac numerals, and the names of the different kinds of beasts, birds, fishes, trees, &c. Of the maritime provinces of Canada. Also, some of the indian names of places, and many familiar words and phrases, translated literally into English.”

About the Author
The Rev. Silas Tertius Rand, 1810-1889, was a Canadian missionary who spent his life among the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia and became a fluent speaker of their language.
